Guido Vecchi was born January 23, 1910 in Malmö by Italian parents and died in 1997 in Gothenburg. He arrived in 1935 as principal cellist of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and became a central figure in Gothenburg music scene as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher.

A close cooperation with the future composers, among them Hilding Rosenberg, Sven-Eric Johanson, Gösta Nystroem and Bo Linde, led to a series of premieres of solo recitals and chamber music. 1982 appeared Guido Vecchi for the last time as a soloist with the Gothenburg Symphony in a cello concerto by Saint-Saëns. In 1994 he sold his fine Venetian Gofriller cello and formed a scholarship fund. Since then, more than 1.7 million have been distributed to young string musicians’ training.

Today’s scholars are Victoria Stjerna (40 000 SEK) and the Sjöströmska Quartet (50 000 SEK).
