Helix by Esa-Pekka Salonen
The famous conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen has always been a composer as well, and has the last couple of decades gained recognition for his sophisticated treatment of form and sounds in his compositions. Helix was written for the BBC Proms and Salonen has said about the work: “The idyllic, almost pastoral opening phrase for piccolo and contra-bassoon returns much later in the horns and trumpets, fortissimo, surrounded by a very busy tutti orchestra. The closing section shows the material in an almost manic light.”
The Conductor Lionel Bringuier has achieved rapid international acclaim and in 2014 became the Music Director of the illustrious Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich. It is as if Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, performed in the same concert this eventing, were made for him, just as the breathtaking Helix by his friend and colleague, Esa-Pekka Salonen.
