Ives: The Unanswered Question

Add to calendar
The millions he earned from his insurance company meant that the American eccentric Charles Ives could think and create freely. And what a creativity that unleashed!

There is something enigmatic in his music, as if he is trying to portray the impossible. Yet he could be both concrete and clear – as in The Unanswered Question from 1908, where the trumpet asks the perennial question of existence, at a distance but always present.

The strings’ whisper and hum are the silence of the druids, while all who think they have the right answer are arguing in the woodwinds. In the end, only the humming of the strings remains, like the eternal music of the spheres.

Ives described the piece as “a cosmic landscape” beyond time and space, which is reflected in this performance where musicians from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra fade in and fade out, under the guidance of an omniscient but invisible hand.
