Shostakovich Passacaglia from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

The dramatic intermezzo from Shostakovich’s masterpiece

The opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is a terrifying story of betrayal, violence and murder. In the second act, Katerina has poisoned her father in law who has severely beaten her lover. The Passacaglia is a musical comment to those horrors, and also a premonition of the next scene where Katerina and her lover murder her husband.

The concert is led by the orchestra’s new Chief Conductor Santtu-Mattias Rouvali.
