Nielsen: Helios with Rouvali
In Greek mythology, Helios is the coachman of the Sun’s four-in hand carriage, “exceedingly beautiful with golden hair and a radiant expression”.In 1903, Nielsen was in Greece with his wife Anne Marie, a sculptor. He was inspired by the motion of the sun and composed the concert overture Helios, depicting the run of the day: “Stillness and darkness, then the sun rises during a joyous song of praise, wanders on its golden path and slowly sets in the sea.”
