Music from four nations

French organ romanticism at its best, together with music by Wagner and Mendelssohn – the latter’s virtuoso Variations sérieuses in a version for organ. A programme that draws on different traditions to showcase just what the new organ is capable of musically and stylistically. We also get to enjoy a brilliant Toccata by the Belgian Mailly, and the world première of Monakgotla’s piece Illusionist, composed especially for the inauguration.

The organ is called the “Queen of Instruments”, and for a good reason: no other acoustic instrument is so varied in sound and dynamics, from the most subtle, solitary note to massive chords that make floors and walls vibrate. This is aptly demonstrated by the new, world class Rieger Orgelbau organ with two keyboards, 112 stops and over 9000 pipes.
