Santtu-Matias Rouvali is often hailed for his ability to get to the very core of music. Or, as the Sunday Times wrote: “He’s the real deal, music practically flows from the man’s fingertips.” That can be experienced by the audience in this rich Nordic package: Sibelius’ Symphonies No. 6 and No. 7 and Nielsen’s Violin Concerto with the acclaimed violinist Baiba Skride.

The music at this concert was written in the early 20th century and revolves around both natural mysticism and bold influences from the continent – music from a transitional period shaped by two different artistic temperaments. Sibelius had his roots in the national romanticism but looked in his last two symphonies towards new worlds that have liberated themselves from the earthly and concrete. Carl Nielsen raised his ear to the continent where exciting things were happening in the 1910s, at the same time as he followed his own marked path in the violin concerto: rhythmic, virtuoso and with warmth in his eyes.

International, Latvian violinist Baiba Skride has previously received many ovations in the Gothenburg Concert Hall, and also on tour to Germany and Belgium.

Kyiv Soloists

Ukrainian Kyiv Soloists were on a European tour when the war broke out. With no way back, they chose to use the music to support their country and fellow human beings affected by the war in their homeland. This evening they are visiting the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra’s concert with a short work by the Ukrainian composer Miroslav Skoryk at the start of the second half of the concert.

Earlier the same week, they play their own benefit concert in Stenhammarsalen, 29 March 19.30.

“We play for peace. It is difficult to put our emotions into words…
our families are in Ukraine and we keep contact with them every day; with our parents, siblings and relatives. Our work is tough right now, but we play. Music helps us in this situation, and it is our duty to bring out Ukrainian culture.”
Anatoliy Vasylkivsky, Artistic Leader of the Kyiv Soloists

You who have a valid Ukrainian passport have free entry to the concert subject to availability, book your ticket at 031-7265300, biljett@gso.se.

Donate – your gift is doubled

Music unites us and strengthens the bonds between people. We want to use all the power we can gather to support people affected by an indefensible attack. It is important that the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra can open the Concert Hall for Kyiv Soloists for a week. That we can all open our hearts and assist in the ways we can feels obvious.

We hope that as many as possible contribute to achieving the goal of raising at least SEK 500 000 for UNICEF and their work in Ukraine. During the month of March, your gift will be doubled by the Akelius Foundation.

Donate your gift by following these simple steps:

The fundraising is ongoing until 3 April 2022.
