Stravinsky: Petrushka with Rouvali
“I’ve spoken Russian for all of my life, I think in Russian, the way I express myself is Russian…” Igor Stravinsky explained at the age of 80. Petrushka is the story of three puppets appearing in a Russian market, and the music is full of the colours and the whims one may expect to see in such a place. It is surely among the most beautiful music Stravinsky wrote. Time and again the music draws forth smiles: there are carousels, organ-grinders, romance, slapstick – all presented in a marvelous orchestration.
