Beautiful chamber music by Brahms, Mozart and Maier-Röntgen with the newly formed Efimov quartet. The piano quartet format, which appeared in the classical period, suited the homes and the salons. According to researcher Eva Ӧhrström, homes were an important scene for chamber music, but the musicians of the 19th century lacked social networks. Since they were always travelling, musicians and composers formed their own guild. So it’s not so strange that Johannes Brahms and Amanda Maier-Röntgen met. Musician couple Edvard and Nina Grieg lived with the Röntgens during their visits to Holland.

Grieg wrote to Julius Röntgen about Amanda Maier’s piano quartet: ‘I’m more than happy to believe that your wife has written a beautiful piano quartet, as I have always admired her talent!’
