He’s enraptured Gothenburg before with his interpretation of Bruckner. Now, Christoph Eschenbach returns to engage with the Austrian genius once again. Bruckner’s seventh has been described as the composer’s most jubilant symphony. Aptly so, as it brought the composer great personal joy: it was this majestic symphony that first led to international acclaim for Bruckner – a success that continues to this day.

A nice, romantic introduction to the concert is Reinecke’s Flute Concerto in D major with the young flutist Stathis Karapanos. Music where you can’t miss the soloist’s and flute’s joy when happily and quickly fluttering like a butterfly over the meadows, to occasionally rest on a bluebell and show off all its richness of colour.

Christoph Eschenbach is the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor, together with Barbara Hannigan. His life story is quite a read. Orphaned by the war, Eschenbach grew up living with his mother’s cousin, pianist Wallydore Eschenbach, in Schleswig-Holstein and Aachen. Her lessons laid the foundation for his illustrious musical career later in life.

Today, Christoph Eschenbach is a sought-after guest conductor invited to some of the foremost orchestras and opera houses of the world in places like Vienna, Berlin, Paris, London, Los Angeles, Boston, Shanghai and Milan, and to prestigious festivals in Salzburg, Tanglewood, Ravinia, St Petersburg and Schleswig-Holstein. He has previously served as chief conductor of the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich, Houston Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg, Orchestre de Paris, Philadelphia Orchestra and National Orchestra of Washington, and has conducted operas at the Houston Opera, Royal Opera House in London, Bayreuth Festival, Mariinsky Theatre, Opéra Bastille and the Metropolitan Opera.
