Last season, the soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan became first guest conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Her unmistakable voice and unparalleled sense of beauty in the phrasing have been praised by critics as well as the public. Experience her at this concert in Mahler’s bright and lyrically playful fourth symphony where she both conducts and sings. Music that embodies the fantasy of a heavenly kingdom where everyone lives in harmony with each other. The highlight of the symphony is the last movement with soprano solo: “We enjoy the heavenly delights”.

Joy can quickly turn to sorrow. Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No 44, “Mourning”, has a slow movement that the composer, according to legend, wished for his own funeral. But Haydn would not be Haydn without verve and spirit: the final bursts of energy with its driving rhythms and playful action between the instruments.
