Gulaza is an Israeli quartet that performs songs in Arabic. The songs from Yemen are traditionally sung in secret by women who have been forced into marriage. In Gulaza’s interpretation, the songs are sung openly and with passion, by a man.

Among Yemeni women today, there is still a strong tradition of songs that have been passed down from mother to daughter for centuries. The songs, with their mysticism, religiosity and yearning poetry, have rarely, if ever, left the closed, female domain.

Gulaza’s singer, Igal Mizrahi, was raised in a Jewish/Yemeni culture. He was fascinated by the hidden world from an early age, and has spent many years studying the traditional songs. Gulaza’s interpretations combine Oriental string instruments and percussion with cello and guitar. The music, and frontman Igal Mizrahi, dressed in traditional Yemeni women’s clothes, create a sense of drama that takes the audience into a fascinating world of prayer, passion, dance, love and yearning for freedom.
