SIRVENTÉS POKE FUN AT THE ESTABLISHMENT

A performance with music from southern France in a way that you have never experienced before.

The Serventis trio is from southern France, the region historically and presently called Occitania. Sirventes, literally translated “ a servant’s song”, was a form of Occitan lyrical poetry during the Middle Ages, far from the cliché that reduces the troubadour to a ballad-singing lover in his ivory tower. The form was a protest and satire directed at everyone in power.

Based on their respective backgrounds in Western and Eastern music, popular music and art music, the trio explores the potential of the medieval Occitan monody. The legacy that the troubadours from the 13th century left behind is developed with digressions and improvisations

In all humility, Serventis shows how music and poetry can reflect the absurdities of the world.
