He set exceptionally high standards for his own work and spent 20 years completing his First Symphony. His music combines emotional intensity and Romantic passion with a masterful sense of form and structure.<\/p>\n<p>Brahms grew up in Hamburg and later settled in Vienna, where he achieved his major breakthrough with Ein deutsches Requiem. He was close to Robert and Clara Schumann and composed everything from piano and chamber music to concertos and four masterful symphonies.
