From an early age, she composed works for piano, chamber ensembles and orchestra, developing a distinctive musical voice that left its mark on 19th-century musical life.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside her work as a composer, she built an international career as a pianist, supported her large family for periods of her life, and played an important role in championing the music of both Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
