After having been isolated by the Iron Curtain in Eastern Europe during the Cold War, Bacewicz has gained a reputation in the 21st century as the &#8220;First Lady&#8221; of Polish music.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gra\u017cyna Bacewicz was born in the Polish city of \u0141\u00f3d\u017a in 1909 as the third of four children of the Lithuanian music educator Vincas Bacevi\u010dius and his Polish wife Maria Modli\u0144ska. The name Gra\u017cyna is derived from the Lithuanian adjective &#8216;gra\u017eus&#8217;, meaning &#8216;beautiful&#8217;. The family often spent their summers in Lithuania, a country that also longed for its independence. When the father took a teaching position in the provisional capital of Lithuania, Kaunas, Gra\u017cyna remained in Poland with her mother.
