The flute is a wind instrument and one of humanity’s oldest musical instruments. A flute made from mammoth bone has been discovered that is at least 30,000 years old. Modern orchestral flutes come in four different sizes, with the piccolo being the smallest. Although flutes today are usually made of metal, they are still part of the woodwind family. The flute is held sideways and played by blowing across the mouthpiece.
Our orchestra has four flautists.
