The orchestral instruments The horn

With its warm, rounded sound, the horn can both carry a melody and blend seamlessly into the orchestra. Discover the brass instrument that evolved from the hunting horn and whose sound is shaped using both valves and the player’s hand.

The horn is a brass instrument that evolved from the hunting horn, via signal and post horns. Today, valved horns are commonly pitched in two keys, one higher and one lower. Horn players in symphony orchestras often specialise in either the lower or upper register. The valves are operated with the left hand, while the right hand is placed inside the bell to adjust the sound.

Our orchestra has six horn players.
