The orchestral instruments The percussion

From the mighty roar of the timpani to the delicate chime of the triangle. Meet the orchestra’s vast family of drums, cymbals, xylophones and other instruments that bring rhythm, colour and energy to the music.

Percussion is a collective term for musical instruments played with sticks, mallets or the hands. Timpani are very common in the symphony orchestra, as are the snare drum, bass drum, cymbals and triangle. Tuned percussion instruments such as the xylophone, glockenspiel and marimba are used both as solo instruments and as part of the orchestra.

Our orchestra has five percussionists who play a wide range of different instruments.
