The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Ryan Bancroft return for a guest performance in Gothenburg with a temperamental and varied programme. Hear soloist Bruce Liu perform Paganini variations on piano.
Canadian pianist Bruce Liu won the international Chopin Competition in 2021. Tonight, Rachmaninoff’s challenging variations on Paganini’s well-known theme are on the menu. Tempo and drama are guaranteed!
Niccolò Paganini was an unparalleled violinist and superstar whom everyone wanted to hear. Numerous composers have been inspired by the short pieces of his 24 Caprices. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s variations on Paganini’s theme push the boundaries and are based on a close collaboration with the orchestra.
As an introduction, we hear Swedish Benjamin Staern’s dazzling orchestral work Jubilate from 2009. It contains all the celebration, drama and victory of a football stadium.
The evening also concludes with drama in Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2. “The Four Temperaments” present an entire range of the human psyche.
Have a seat in the Great Hall an hour before the concert and let the introduction open the door to the stories behind the works, facts about the composers and personal reflections. The introduction is included in your ticket, lasts about 30 minutes and has free seating in the hall.
