Join in as the Västra Götaland Youth Orchestra play three British favourites. Hear dramatic sounds of Ethel Smyth and Doreen Carwithen, with Elgar’s Enigma Variations as the finale. Conductor Andreas Hanson.
The Enigma Variations never cease to fascinate, with their slow and beautiful melodies. It is no wonder that they are considered to be among the best classical works ever in the UK.
We also hear two British female pioneers in this evening’s concert. Doreen Carwithen was a prominent composer in the 40s and 50s and is known for her film music. Perhaps even more famous is Ethel Smyth, an activist at the beginning of the last century who wrote anthems for women’s suffrage.
This is a chance to experience the large and elegant musical trove from the country in the west.
