FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES: SIBELIUS AND NIELSEN

Add to calendar
LIVESTREAM 26 SEPTEMBER 2019 19:30 CET
Experience two Nordic giants – Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen. In the symphonic fantasy Pohjola’s Daughter, Sibelius interprets national epic Kalevala and hero Väinämöinen who, while travelling from the cold country of Pohjola, sees a beautiful girl in the sky spin a golden yarn on her spinning wheel.

Sibelius has charged his musical imagination with plenty of intensity and bright colours, well matched by the sounds of the Gothenburg Symphony and soprano Anu Komsi.

Carl Nielsen wrote his fourth symphony in the shadow of the First World War. Emotional, extroverted music about life and what it means to be human. Carl Nielsen’s motto for the symphony was: ‘Music is life, and as such inextinguishable.’ He also called it The Inextinguishable.

There’s more Finland with Magnus Lindberg’s Accused for soprano and orchestra with text from the written record of three dramatic interrogations. Accused was co-commissioned by the Gothenburg Symphony and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
