Music tells us something about our history. It is a story about the culture we live in. It brings people together. It is important to remember that we are not so different from one another.
When many people feel the same thing, a sense of community emerges. Sometimes, when I’m at a group workout, everyone sings along to the music. It moves me every time. It’s not far from the feeling I get when playing with the orchestra: “Now we’ve experienced something that raises or lowers our pulse – together!”

I’m drawn to music for large orchestra – Strauss, Mahler, Stravinsky… It’s about being part of something greater than yourself.
I look out into the hall and see familiar faces in the same seats, concert after concert – I almost find myself searching for them. I see the enthusiasm, people closing their eyes, or watching the soloist with curiosity. During the concert, I enjoy watching the audience. I pick up on their energy.
History, a sense of community, personal encounters – that’s what makes music so powerful for me.
