Experience the masterpiece that director Stanley Kubrick turned into space music: Ligeti’s visionary Atmosphères, performed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Barbara Hannigan also conducts music by Haydn and Strauss that moves through time and space.
Experience the visionary Atmosphères, a modern masterpiece which director Stanley Kubrick did not hesitate to turn into space music. Barbara Hannigan also conducts music on the passing of time by Haydn and Strauss.
What does our time on earth mean? Why are we here? In Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question, the strings create an eerie, almost careless curtain of sound behind that eternal question, asked by a lone trumpet. With increasingly impatient frustration, a quartet of flutes attempts to answer. With this piece, completed in 1908 using a collage technique, Ives was half a century before his time. It would be his most popular work.
American Ruth Crawford Seeger’s String Quartet, named the most important Modernist work in the genre, is equally innovative. She called it “dissonant music”. String Quartet from 1931 consists of four movements, and when the andante movement did not quite feel right, she rearranged it for orchestra. She also wanted a conductor to take the lead.
Györgi Ligeti’s visionary work Atmosphères quickly gained cult status. Its space-like mood was ideal for Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it is among the great classics of the 20th century.
The dynamic Barbara Hannigan holds the baton at this evening’s concert, which is all about the passage and end of time. Perhaps listeners will come closer to the answer of a mystery.
