Finland is big on music, there is no doubt about that in this star-studded evening. 23-year-old conducting prodigy Tarmo Peltokoski conducts Esa-Pekka Salonen’s challenging cello concert with Senja Rummukainen as soloist. As a conclusion, we hear Shostakovich’s 11th symphony.

The Gothenburg public gets a chance to see a rare talented conductor when Tarmo Peltokoski is back in Gothenburg’s Concert Hall. The pandemic years became his springboard when orchestras hired young conductors. After only two visits to the Bremen Chamber Philharmonic, Tarmo Peltokoski was appointed first guest conductor, their first in 42 years.

Esa-Pekka Salonen has been one of his teachers, and now he tackles his mentor’s cello concerto, originally written for the world cellist Yo-Yo Ma and accompanied by electro effects. Tonight it is Senja Rummukainen who is the soloist in this cross-border concert.

To conclude, we hear Shostakovich’s heartbreaking 11th Symphony. It was dedicated to the thousands of innocent people who were gunned down in front of the Winter Palace in Moscow during the first revolution in 1905. In the symphony, the song “Welcome the Free Word of Liberty” is cited, among others. A salute and a warning from the 1950s about what tyrants can do and how only the truth can change.

The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1905 and currently consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra is based in Gothenburg Concert Hall – a gem of functionalism on Götaplatsen square that has enchanted music lovers since 1935. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra’s Chief Conductor from 1907 until 1922. He gave the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited his colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to collaborate with the orchestra. Under the leadership of Chief Conductor Neeme Järvi between 1982 and 2004, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra undertook a number of international tours and made a hundred or so album recordings while establishing itself as one of Europe’s foremost orchestras. In 1997 the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra received the title of the National Orchestra of Sweden. Since season 2017-2018 Santtu-Matias Rouvali is Chief Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Since season 2019-2020 Barbara Hannigan is Principal Guest Conductor. Christoph Eschenbach was also Principal Guest Conductor of Gothenburg Symphony in the years 2019-2022 – together they formed a strong three-leaf clover consisting of three completely different types of artists. We are also extremely proud to be an official partner of soprano Barbara Hannigan’s mentor initiative Equilibrium, with focus on young singers and musicians who are just beginning their careers. Sten Cranner is the orchestra’s CEO and Artistic Director, while Gustavo Dudamel holds the title of Honorary Conductor and Neeme Järvi that of Principal Conductor Emeritus. Region Västra Götaland is owner of the orchestra. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra works regularly with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Joana Carneiro, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christian Zacharias and Anja Bihlmaier.

Tarmo Peltokoski from Vaasa, Finland got his dream job at the age of 21 when he earlier this year was appointed first guest conductor of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie in Bremen after only two guest appearances with the orchestra. Peltokoski began his conducting studies with Professor Emeritus Jorma Panula at the age of 14 and currently studies with Sakari Oramo at the Sibelius Academy. He has also been taught by Hannu Lintu and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Tarmo Peltokoski is also a celebrated pianist and studies piano at the Sibelius Academy with Antti Hotti. He has appeared as a soloist with all major Finnish orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony, the Helsinki and Tampere Philharmonic and the Oulu Symphony. He has performed concerts and chamber music at the Åbo and St. Michels festivals.
