Music drawn from the movies with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; Santtu-Matias Rouvali, conductor; and Markus Lang, double bass.
With music that is deeply linked to the world of cinema, Chinese Tan Dun is one of the world’s most played and popular composers. The music he composed for the film Hero (2002) reached millions of people all over the world. His music for the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) won an Academy Award for Best Original Score. His evocative double bass concerto is performed by the Gothenburg Symphony’s Markus Lang as soloist, giving voice to the soft and rhythmic expressions conveyed by the king of string instruments.
Austrian Hans Rott’s symphony is grand and marvellously beautiful. Listeners will easily be floored by the powerful introduction. As a composer, Rott never got to fulfil his career: he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. But his music truly deserves a large audience. The orchestra is led by chief conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
