Empowering music with the Gothenburg Symphony and conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
Icelandic Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s music has been described as otherworldly; airy, mysterious, intense. Her work Catamorphosis is about the catastrophe our planet is facing. The outlook from the lyrical Alp Symphony by Strauss ends the concert with hope and power.
The Times writes that “Thorvaldsdottir has carved out her own corner in contemporary music by creating symphonic works of sustained brilliance.” The commissioned work Catamorphosis had its world premiere in 2021 and was performed for the first time in the United States in early 2023, when Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducted the New York Philharmonic. The New York Times described the music as a somber cry for help.
Anna Thorvaldsdottir says that the main inspiration for the work is “the fragility of the relationship we have with our planet. The aura of the work is characterized by the emotional vortex that moves around the earth and the stark situation that occurs when we realize that without a change it will be too late – we are facing total annihilation, a catastrophe.”
The evening begins with Santtu-Matias Rouvali’s own selection from Sibelius’ play music from The Storm. As a conclusion, we hear the lyrical Alp Symphony, a glimpse of just how beautiful and wild nature can be and a view that gives hope and strength.
