Barbara Hannigan takes us on an emotional journey filled with birdsong and star-crossed lovers. Joining her is her friend Bertrand Chamayou, performing Ravel’s hopeful and jazz-inspired Piano Concerto.
French Bertrand Chamayou is one of the world’s most celebrated and in-demand concert pianists. At last he is coming to Gothenburg Concert Hall for a collaboration with the Symphony Orchestra, led by Principal Guest Conductor Barbara Hannigan. Their friendship has borne fruit, both on stage and on albums.
In the first part, we hear two chamber music works by Messiaen, who had an ability to ask difficult questions through little means. With hints of birdsong, freedom is ever-present. This is paired with music by György Ligeti, “the most phenomenal creative genius I have ever worked with,” says Barbara Hannigan. The solo clarinet is performed by Urban Claesson from the Symphony Orchestra.
After the interval, we follow the lovers Pelléas and Mélisande in Fauré’s beautiful orchestral suit. Like birdsong, the flute lifts the sound towards the sky in the very popular Sicilienne.
Bertrand Chamayou is celebrated for his imaginative style, virtuosity and dazzlingly beautiful piano playing. He is one of the great interpreters of French music and his vast repertoire includes Maurice Ravel’s complete works for piano. Now he treats us to Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major.
It is a work that was difficult to compose: Ravel is said to have written just two measures at a time. His inspiration came from Mozart and Chopin, but hints of jazz and blue notes appear, and as a result, this piece has been considered something of a follow-up to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – the best of the best from different worlds.
“I’ve created a special concert programme which I call “Strange Birds”. Of course, birds feature in the Messiaen pieces, as he was a composer deeply inspired by nature and its sounds and rhythms. Funnily, the “exotic” bird songs featured in the Oiseaux Exotiques mainly come from North America, so they are not so foreign to me, as a Canadian. Ligeti, the most phenomenal creative genius I have ever worked with, invites us into a weird and hypnotic spider-web which shakes and breaks in the night air. Finally Ravel’s masterpiece for piano and orchestra, the Concerto in G, draws on Basque folk tunes and American jazz idioms creating a rich and strange circus in the first and third movements, while breaking our hearts with the tenderness of the second.“
