Rudresh Mahanthappa has been named alto saxophonist of the year by Down Beat, released twelve albums, and toured in a number of constellations since moving to New York in 1998.

He grew up in Colorado, the son of Indian immigrants, and studied at Berklee in Boston and DePaul in Chicago. With his background and intensive studies of southern Indian, classical music – on site in India – he has a highly personal way of improvising, which makes him unique in jazz: “…a pioneering convergence of styles… new music of this calibre has never been explored before” (Jazz Times).

With his latest CD Bird Calls, he pays tribute – in his own way – to one of the greatest legends of jazz: Charlie Parker.
