We’re talking about Mathias Halvorsen’s well-prepared piano, which tackles Bach’s stately The Well-Tempered Clavier and its legendary exploration of different keys.

Halvorsen has created versions of Bach’s preludes and fugues unlike any other, using wooden sticks, rubber bands and ping-pong balls to produce novel sounds and dimensions from a “well-prepared piano”. Music anchored in Bach but ready for the future.

In this clip, Mathias Halvorsen enthusiastically experiments with the Goldberg Variations as his starting point.
