Conductor Kristian Sallinen returns with an evening of Finnish music. We are taken on an adventure with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Iveta Apkalna on organ, arriving safe at Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2.
Follow along on a journey through three eras with Finland’s foremost composers. This is the Swedish premiere of a new organ concerto composed by Sebastian Fagerlund, one of Europe’s most prominent composers of his generation. The soloist is the charismatic Iveta Apkalna, who is at the forefront of discovering and presenting new music for organ.
But we begin with music from the 1920s, Moonlight on Jupiter, with the subtitle “Fantastic tone poem for orchestra”. Composer Väinö Raitio was a leading figure of Finnish modernism and a bit of a rebel. Moonlight became a theme for the Finnish fight for freedom, as did Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 – even if Sibelius himself asserted that his music was just music and nothing more. The conductor is the talented young Kristian Sallinen.
Sebastian Fagerlund is from Pargas and composes music for orchestras and conductors around the world, with a strong sense of the large format and the instruments’ virtuosity.
Have a seat in the Great Hall an hour before the concert and let the introduction open the door to the stories behind the works, facts about the composers and personal reflections. The introduction is included in your ticket, lasts about 30 minutes and has free seating in the hall.
