Barbara Hannigan and Stravinsky are a sure match. In this chamber concert, the incredible Barbara Hannigan brings us close to the innovative composer with a program she has personally put together. There will be poetic songs, the septet and the Dumbarton Oaks concert with musicians from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Hannigan on vocals. At her side is promising conductor Luis Castillo-Briceño.
In the 1920s – just like every cultural personality – Stravinsky was in Paris, where all the excitement was happening. He heard music he had never before encountered. While his art-world colleagues were creating Cubism, Stravinsky let swinging ragtime music flow through a similarly boxy shape, resulting in modern, energetic music.
His teacher, Nadia Boulanger, helped Igor Stravinsky with his breakthrough in the US thanks to the commission of Dumbarton Oaks, a gift for a society couple celebrating their 30-year wedding anniversary. Talk about finding the perfect gift! The Septet, which was composed much later, was also dedicated to the couple and their Dumbarton Oaks estate.
With a father who was an opera singer, Stravinsky’s songs were pure masterpieces. They are about childhood and are based on Japanese poems with simple forms. However, that does not prevent us from hearing traces of his great orchestral work, The Rite of Spring, within them. In Ragtime, we hear another fairly well-known work: The Soldier’s Tale. Conductor Barbara Hannigan has recorded several of this evening’s pieces.
