Experience a mystical, captivating musical cosmos, originating from nomads. The quartet Huun-Huur-Tu explores Mongolian music and has brought the unique sound of throat singing around the world.
The quartet Huun-Huur-Tu presents a mysterious and captivating musical cosmos, filled with overtones and undertones. Since 1992, this quartet has developed traditional throat singing from their home region in the Russian republic of Tuva, at the border of Mongolia.
The group’s founder Kaigal-ool Khovalyg was a shepherd on the steppes of southern Siberia before he became a touring musician. His debut album had the not entirely unsurprising title Sixty Horses in My Herd and the quartet’s music has led to collaborations with greats such as the Kronos Quartet and Frank Zappa.
For accompaniment, Huun-Huur-Tu primarily uses instruments from Tuva, such as the igil (lute), khomuz (mouth harp), tungur (shaman drum) and tuyug (horse hooves). The overall sound is complemented with guitar and electronic elements.
Like a modern version of the nomadic culture to which they belong, since beginning, the quartet has toured the entire world. Throat singing sounds at times like a flute or the sound of a bird – an expression of the human voice’s incredible breadth and power.
