Liszt was a musical revolutionary whose works, with their versatility and evasive character, refused to let themselves be captured and defined.

In the second piano concerto, he made fun of Prussian military music (ridiculously showy marches), tickled the bourgeoisie with unabashedly sentimental and emotional tunes (genuine and ingratiating in equal measure), and gave the circus audience a piano part so virtuosic that there were barely enough keys.

Alice Sara Ott is a daring and wilful pianist who, with a determined gaze, delivers exactly what is needed for this music. Funnily enough, part of Liszt’s artistic spirit can also be glimpsed in Shostakovich’s music, particularly in the fifteenth symphony, which, with its quotes from Rossini and Bartók, makes fun of itself while being deadly serious.

But there are also very emotional parts in deep hues, from individual string instruments to powerful brass. A longed-for challenge for Santtu-Matias Rouvali – chief conductor of Gothenburg Symphony, who is a great admirer of Shostakovich.

The dark horse of the evening: a driven and inspired overture by Polish personality Grażyna Bacewicz, who, during the second half of the 20th century, created a unique musical world of the modernist variety.
