With conductor Cornelius Meister at the helm and soprano Cornelia Beskow, we promise a journey through Wagner’s rich and deeply transformative musical landscape.
The concert begins with the Wesendonck Lieder, a series of five songs based on the poetry of Mathilde Wesendonck, Wagner’s beloved muse. This deeply emotional work, composed at the same time as the opera Tristan and Isolde, explores themes of love, longing and transcendence, and provides intimate insight into Wagner’s expressive artistry.
The other half contains The Ring Without Words, an orchestral suite that distils this monumental drama into a symphonic experience. The suite captures the greatness, passion and mystical force of Wagner’s four operas about the Ring of the Nibelung, lining up a string of the best-known and most popular orchestral parts. Experience the Ride of the Valkyries, Siegfried’s Journey on the Rhine, and Siegfried’s Funeral March together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
Cornelius Meister is one of Germany’s most distinguished conductors, acclaimed for his musicality, precision, and deep understanding of the great works of German Romanticism. Since 2018, he has served as Music Director at the Staatsoper Stuttgart. His interpretations of Wagner’s music are characterised by dramatic intensity, rich orchestral colour, and a strong sense of the music’s architectural structure. With impressive technical command and a unique ability to highlight both the grandeur and the lyricism in Wagner’s scores, Cornelius Meister stands as a conductor of the very highest international calibre.
