Concerto for snare drum and percussion ensemble

Add to calendar
Several successful conductors actually started their professional careers as percussionists, among them the world conductor Sir Simon Rattle (London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic) and the Symphony Orchestra’s former principal conductor Neeme Järvi.

And there is another close to us: Santtu-Matias Rouvali, since 2017 the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra’s chief conductor. Here we get a rare insight into his handling of mallets and sticks together with the orchestra’s percussionists. Principal percussionist Roger Carlsson is the soloist in the Icelandic composer Áskell Másson’s Concerto for snare drum and percussion ensemble – a formidable demonstration of what you can do with the modest drum that in the hands of a skilled soloist blossoms into a full-fledged concert instrument.
