Season Opening with Pekka Kuusisto

As the season opens, we are thrown into the magical sound world of Swedish composer Anders Hillborg. Hear the world premiere of his new concerto for saxophone and orchestra. The soloist is the composer’s son, award-winning saxophone player Theo Hillborg.

And what could better suit a season opening than a work entitled Sunrise? The evening begins with the first part of the orchestral suite by Finnish-Swedish composer Ida Moberg, music that the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra recorded on a Swedish Grammis-winning album. And the evening concludes with Gustav Mahler’s powerful Symphony No. 1, called Titan, in which he successfully bridged the romantic nineteenth century and early-twentieth-century modernism.

Transcending genres, Principal Guest Conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto works with jazz and folk music, sound artists and jugglers. His artistic integrity and ability to play with tradition have made him famous around the world. In 2026 he was inaugurated in the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In his second season in partnership with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, we can expect surprising changes and plenty of energy on stage.
