“Bach is Bach, just as God is God.” These words are attributed to composer Hector Berlioz. And anyone who hears the endless repertoire that flowed from the masterful Bach in the Baroque heyday will be quick to agree. Together with BAGS and singers, we hear one of this master’s less commonly performed pieces: the so-called Lutheran Mass in G Minor. It is something of a younger sibling to the more famous Mass in B Minor. Two centuries later, Benjamin Britten composed six serenades for his beloved partner, the tenor Peter Pears. For accompaniment, he used a solo horn and string orchestra. The lyrics are from English poetry about the magic of the night, about the woods, solace and deep sleep.
Tenor Andrew Staples has received acclaim for roles in works by Handel, Mozart and Britten and is active as a director for stage and theatre. Tonight, he leads the ensemble from the stage in the Great Hall in this exciting, multi-era performance.
Six musicians from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra offer a selection of delightful string music from near and far at the post-concert mingling.
