Ukrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv is constantly breaking new ground. Now she conducts Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony and Rachmaninov’s grandiose Piano Concerto No. 3 with lively and passion. Soloist is Swedish world pianist Roland Pöntinen.
Oksana Lyniv conducted her first orchestra at the age of 16. With strong ties to her former homeland, she is significant in the musical development there. Lyniv sees himself as a link between West and East, between Schumann and Rachmaninov if you will.
Symphony No. 3 from 1850, called the Rhine Symphony, was the last symphony Robert Schumann wrote. He wanted to pay tribute to his hometown along the Rhine, and was inspired by Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony when he depicted folk life and idyllic landscapes along the riverbank.
The 150th anniversary Sergei Rachmaninov had an artistic breakdown and after hypnosis he returned with the third piano concerto. This powerful and wistful masterpiece is a technical and artistic challenge, depicted among other things in the acclaimed feature film Shine in 1996. Roland Pöntinen has explored Rachmaninov for a long time and is a master of piano music of this caliber.
