Enjoy vibrant saxophone and shimmering sunrise as the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Pekka Kuusisto launch the season. High energy is guaranteed with the sounds of Anders Hillborg, Ida Moberg and Mahler.
As the season opens, we are thrown into the magical sound world of Swedish composer Anders Hillborg. Hear the world premiere of his new concerto for saxophone and orchestra. The soloist is the composer’s son, award-winning saxophone player Theo Hillborg.
And what could better suit a season opening than a work entitled Sunrise? The evening begins with the first part of the orchestral suite by Finnish-Swedish composer Ida Moberg, music that the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra recorded on a Swedish Grammis-winning album. And the evening concludes with Gustav Mahler’s powerful Symphony No. 1, called Titan, in which he successfully bridged the romantic nineteenth century and early-twentieth-century modernism.
“An orchestra’s ability to place us in a different temporal context, one work at a time, is an enormous gift in an age of fleeting attention and news alerts.”
Pekka Kuusisto
Transcending genres, Principal Guest Conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto works with jazz and folk music, sound artists and jugglers. His artistic integrity and ability to play with tradition have made him famous around the world. In his second season in partnership with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, we can expect surprising changes and plenty of energy on stage.
Have a seat in the Great Hall an hour before the concert and let the introduction open the door to the stories behind the works, facts about the composers and personal reflections. The introduction is included in your ticket, lasts about 30 minutes and has free seating in the hall. Sit wherever suits you – a smooth start to the concert experience.
