Trio Da Kali from Mali

The World in the Concert Hall presents: Captivating rhythms with brilliant musicians from the Mande culture.

Event has already taken place

African Trio Da Kali consists of three brilliant musicians from the Mande culture in southern Mali. With voice, balafon and bass ngoni, Trio Da Kali is eager to develop and highlight a traditional and neglected repertoire. DJ Said plays in the foyer before the concert, the bar opens at 18.30.

Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, daughter of the legendary singer Kassé Mady Diabaté, is the trio singer. With her rich, expressive voice and natural vibrato, she has been compared to Mahalia Jackson, America’s great gospel singer.

The band leader is the master-balafonist Lassana Diabate. He is one of Mali’s most amazing musicians and has played with many of West Africa’s foremost artists. The youngest member of the Trio is the base ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté, the son of the world famous and Grammy nominated ngoni player Bassekou Kouyaté.

Trio Da Kali met at a collaborative project with the Kronos Quartet, wich the quartet’s violinist David Harrington called “one of the most beautiful collaborations Kronos has had during its first 40 years”.

Trio Da Kali has appeared in some of the world’s most prestigious venues: Royal Albert Hall, Theater de la Ville and Royal Festival Hall.
