Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 5

An emerging Finnish star conductor by the name of Kristian Sallinen leads the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra for this maximally charged hour in the Great Hall. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 from 1888 flows forward, with no inhibitions – it is a raw depiction of sorrow, love and despair. After only a few performances in the 1880s, it was considered one of his most significant orchestral works, and this remains true today. The second movement contains a magnificently beautiful horn solo.
