Some songs stick in the memory and continue to evoke the same strong emotions every time we hear them. The rare song Bailèro is just such a piece, as if from a fantasy film or fairy tale.
In the early twentieth century, French Joseph Canteloube collected folk songs from Auvergne, France, in the charming Occitan language. A total of 27 songs were arranged for solo voice and orchestra, and were first recorded in 1930. This evening we hear a selection of the songs, followd by the mystical story of Daphnis and Chloé, united by love and kinship. Maurice Ravel’s style always finds new paths, giving fresh energy to the Greek tale. The concert starts with the powerful piece Bränningar, by swedish composer Helena Munktell. She studied in Paris and was inspired by her French colleagues.
Conductor Ludovic Morlot is active around the world and is currently Music Director of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra.
