Event has already taken place. Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Santtu-Matias Rouvali conductor, Yuja Wang piano
It’s hard to image a better opening night for an orchestra season we’ve all been looking forward to so longingly. Liszt’s virtuoso Piano Concerto No.1 featuring Chinese piano star Yuja Wang, probably the single most sought-after pianist in the world right now. She returns to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Santtu-Matias Rouvali, with whom she played so wonderfully during her first visit in 2017.
“Bravado playing with cascading notes that downright sparkle,” GP’s Magnus Haglund wrotelast time she played with Gothenburg Symphony. Just listen to some of her recordings and you will understand why.
The concert begins with Carl Nielsen’s Saga Dream, an evocative and spot-on title for this musical embodiment depiction of fairy-tale hero Gunnar and his dream of a better world for mankind. And of course, no programme of music from the Baltic Sea region would be complete without Sibelius. His Symphony No.3 joyfully embraces listeners, albeit so unassumingly and gently we hardly notice it at times… until the blazing rays of the finale’s sun blind us with their entrancingly rhythmic dance.
In the autumn of 2021, we will not give any introductions to the concerts due to the pandemic. Comments on the current programme for this particular concert can be found in connection with the names of the works under the heading Programme on this page (in swedish). You will get even more angles and keys to classical music in the concert magazine Podiet (in swedish) and the lecture series Classical Curiosities at GSOplay (in english).
