Compared to the Fourth Symphony, Sibelius's Fifth Symphony is colorful and vibrant, heroic and accessible. But equally it required more work than the brooding and introverted four. No other work caused him so much trouble. "Walked in the cold spring sun. Had a violent impression of Symphony No. 5. The new one!" "Saw today (April 21, 1915) ten before eleven 16 swans. The finale's main theme shines through an impressionistic shimmer of strings, which contrasts with the swan theme of the trumpets. Under Neeme Järvi's direction from 1982-2004, the Gothenburg Symphony made a series of international tours and made around a hundred disc recordings and established itself among Europe's leading orchestras. Neeme Järvi became chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest in 2005, artistic director of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in 2009 and music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in 2005. He has also been artistic director of the Orchester de la Suisse Romande. He holds the titles of Music Director Emeritus of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Pianist Bengt Forsberg is a highly regarded and actively engaged chamber musician who collaborates with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, cellists Mats Lidström and Andreas Brantelid and violinist Nils-Erik Sparf. Together with Anne Sofie von Otter, he regularly performs concerts around the world and several of their recordings have been awarded prizes. Bengt Forsberg is often engaged as a soloist and has appeared with all major Swedish symphony orchestras and several foreign ones. He has been artistic director of chamber music at Allhelgonakyrkan in Stockholm as well as a frequent guest at Stockholms Konserthus. He can also be heard in Musikrevyn on P2.
