Music takes us back. To places where we have felt happy, to significant events we have experienced. There is nothing else that evokes memories in the same way as music. It makes us relive emotions. As humans, we need it.
For me, the late Romantic music is the most beautiful of all. It is full of emotions and melancholy. Beauty is when the orchestra plays with its entire range and there is a perfect balance between the sections.
My favorite piece this season is Ravel’s La Valse, which we will perform with Santtu-Matias Rouvali. It starts mysteriously and gradually increases to a kind of chaos. The bassoons start the theme, so we kind of draw the attention to us.
It was actually La Valse that made me decide to work as a musician. I played it for the first time when I was 16 years old in the National Youth Orchestra of Germany. It was fantastic. Suddenly, I knew what I wanted to dedicate my life to.
