The irresistible sonata
Very early on, the first violin sonata showed its enchanting powers.
Brahms’ pupil and friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg wrote to the composer: “That one has to love the sonata almost more than anything else on earth, you must know well, and that one gets purely romantic and calmly sink into oneself when dreamily listening to it! It is as if the last movement spins a web over oneself, and the atmospheric contents captivates immediately.”
