Symphony No 5

Few symphonies of the 20th century are as bewildering and rich in captivating melodies as Prokofiev’s fifth symphony, from swirling circus tunes to melancholic depths. It is dynamic, colourful and filled with energy. It was composed in 1944 in a Soviet composers’ village eight miles south of Moscow in two months – astonishingly short time for such an epic and magnificent work.
