Göteborgs Symfoniker

“I like sounds you can’t identify”

Anders Hillborg, 68 years old, is one of Sweden’s most noted contemporary composers. His works are now played in many parts of the world. In the work Sound Atlas, the orchestra is supplemented with something as unusual as a glass harmonica. It gives a very special spherical and evocative, image-rich sound in the room. Here, Anders Hillborg talks personally about his work and about his composing. Sound Atlas has wowed critics and audiences alike. After the premiere at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 2019, one of the critics opined that, if filmmaker Stanley Kubrick came back to remake his cinematic space adventure in 2001, Hillborg would be the right composer for the soundtrack. The Gothenburg Symphony performed the Swedish premiere of Sound Atlas in November 2022. Sound Atlas is a work commissioned by London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Gothenburg Symphony and premiered in London in 2019.
