Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No. 4 Op 60 The Fourth Symphony is, as often said, situated between two symphonic giants. A reputation that has often led to its being overlooked, but in fact it follows a working method that is more the rule than the exception in Beethoven. The revolutionary works are often followed by music that seems to take care of what follows the storm. And this year, 1806 – we are in perhaps the most insanely productive of Beethoven’s life – is no exception. The symphony begins with a tender entry followed by a plateau of unison Bb in strings and winds that is shadowily surrounded by slow melodic movements. The music grows suggestively from a melancholy to a euphoria – from minor to major – when the allegro breaks through in all its splendor. After the first movement's alternating shift between intense outbursts and calm breaths, one of Beethoven's most lyrical adagios follows, where the repetitive rhythm (you hear it immediately in the verse) makes the movement dance forward stubbornly. In the third and fourth movements, a scherzo and an allegro, the music rushes forward. For those who have already noticed how the form of the adagio rhythm is a variation of the first movement's syncopated outbursts, here, in the more dance-like parts of the symphony, you can notice how Beethoven turns the building blocks of the music inside and outside, but at the same time joins them together. In this way, he lets us anticipate the revolution that the symphony's form is facing. Fate will soon be knocking on the door.

In 1844, Robert Schumann had his first serious nervous breakdown, which was followed by several others. The family moved to the quieter Dresden. The Second Symphony became a kind of recovery project. Unusually, all four movements are written in C major or C minor. This can create problems. But Schumann skillfully avoids the work becoming static and harmonically monotonous by inserting contrasting elements - different rhythms, tempi and short key changes within each movement. The first movement begins with the trumpets playing a chorale-like fanfare over the strings. That fanfare returns in the brass in the second movement and also concludes the entire symphony. Like Beethoven, Schumann puts the fast scherzo movement in second place - an incredibly virtuoso perpetuum mobile in the strings and two slower trio sections with woodwinds. A funny two-note motif is repeated through almost the entire movement like an encouraging mantra. The Adagio movement is truly the symphony's emotional center, like a long, melancholic opera aria with poignant solos in the woodwinds. Schumann is said to have been so moved while writing it that he had to take a long break before tackling the joyful, grand final movement which, in addition to robust, march-like elements, uses a simple theme in solo oboe from Beethoven's song An die ferne Geliebte. It was Schumann's tribute to his wife Clara.

The young Norwegian composer arrived in Leipzig in 1863 and was thrown straight into one of Europe's most vital musical environments. At the conservatory, where Edvard Grieg and later Amanda Maier also studied, it was especially in the composition classes that Svendsen's talent shone brightest, this at a time when Leipzig still represented the classical tradition after Mendelssohn and Schumann. Leipzig also gave Svendsen a Nordic self-confidence. In the German environment, his melodies, colored by Norwegian folk tones, became something exotic and sought after. Symphony No. 2 in B flat major (1876) is one of the most vital and brilliantly orchestrated works of Nordic Romanticism. The symphony was written in Oslo, or Kristiania as the city was then called, during a period when Svendsen was also an active conductor and teacher. The style is reminiscent of that developed by Schumann. The melodic ideas are woven tightly together and the movements are tied together by recurring motifs into a poetic whole. The melodies also bear traces of Schumann's dreamy and melancholic phrases, as in the singing strings of the second movement – but with soft Scandinavian lyricism.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No 7 Half Viennese classicist, half romantic, but mostly Beethoven. That's how we're used to seeing him, but he had other sides as well. In both the 6th and 7th symphonies, the folklorist Beethoven appears. In the former he depicts dancing peasants (third movement), and in the seventh symphony he delivers a finale built around a folk dance. Of course, in Beethoven's artful and powerful arrangement - he is incredibly driving, thrusting with weight and force into the chords at an accelerating pace. This restless, rhythmic rondo is one of his most explosive creations. The symphony opens slowly, with upward movements (fast versus slow) contrasted with a pretty, dancing trio. Note Beethoven's orchestral dramaturgy as he strips away the score from the full orchestra until only a flute and an oboe remain. Then the main theme takes over, heralding the 9th Symphony's An die Freude. In the thematic development work, one can often discern the struggle of the lonely against the many, a constantly recurring theme in Beethoven's music. The well-known allegretto in movement two is definitely the symphony's pièce de résistance. This variation movement must have seemed like a very strange animal in Beethoven's time: an evocative passacaglia with a rhythmic figure - one long, two short, two long - pulsating throughout the movement. Above this, Beethoven weaves and develops new parts that increase in strength and scope and then thin out and tone down. The swells are crowned by a couple of solid climaxes. This is Bach and the future at once, the innovative polyphony that would blossom fully in the late string quartets and piano sonatas. The third movement is a scherzo to everything but the name – never have boisterous male laughter (the low strings) and female laughter cascades (the woodwind) been depicted so vividly as here. Beethoven also achieves unusual harmonic effects when he lets the trumpets lie on pedal notes above (reversed!) the melody in the rest of the orchestra. The symphony was first performed on 8 December 1813 together with the almost farcical commissioned work Wellington's Victory, including crevados, cannons and a fugato on God save the King. Orkesterkommentar: Till Göteborgs Symfonikers stora projekt hör framförandet av Liszts samtliga symfoniska dikter. Minns ni det? Idén kom från förre intendenten Sven Kruckenberg som med iver och envishet såg till att Liszts 13 tondikter och två symfonier framfördes i Göteborgs Konserthus. Projektet påbörjades med Dantesymfonin den 17 oktober 1968 under Norman Del Mars ledning och avslutades med Heroïde funèbre den 28 oktober 1977 med Peter Maag som dirigent. Ett riktigt maratonlopp! Reaktionerna var blandade men den följande diskussionen livlig och uppfriskande. Sven Kruckenberg minns själv: ”En stor del av orkestern förstod sig inte på Liszt, men många i publiken tog emot honom med intresse. ”Synen på Liszts musik har i mångt och mycket förändrats sedan dess vilket Jan Ling bland annat tar upp i sin intressanta bok Franz Liszt och 1800-talets konstmusik (Gidlunds, 2009). Franz Liszt är tveklöst en av senromantikens stora förgrundsfigurer. Han mer eller mindre uppfann den symfoniska dikten som enligt ordboken är en ”orkesterkomposition i fri form och symfonisk stil med utpräglat programmatiskt innehåll, vanligtvis ensatsig”. Les préludes betecknas i Liszts verkförteckning också som Symfonisk dikt nr 3. Pluralformen Les préludes är något förbryllande. Liszt skrev och framförde verket första gången 1848 som preludium till sitt stora kör- och orkesterverk De fyra elementen. När stycket reviderats och första gången spelades i sin nya form i Weimar 1854 lade Liszt till raden ”Efter Lamartine” på titelbladet. Där syftar han på en dikt av den franske lyrikern Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) som ingår i samlingen Méditations poétiques från 1820. Titelns pluralform får sin förklaring i Lamartines rader: ”Vad annat är vårt liv än en följd av preludier till den okända sång, vars högtidliga begynnelsetoner stäms upp av döden? Kärleken är varje tillvaros strålande morgonrodnad. Men vilket livsöde finns, vars första ljuva lycka inte brutits av något oväder, som med sin dödande stormvind krossat dess illusioner och med sin olycksbringande blixt splittrat dess altare?” Les préludes är typisk för den eklektiske Liszt. Här finns arvet från den preussiska militärmusiken (som även är tongivande hos Liszts förebild Beethoven) och romantikens ljuva klanger i skön förening med den typ av tematisk bearbetning (metamorfosteknik) och kromatisk äventyrlighet som Wagner skulle dra till sin spets. Liszt var för övrigt en stor inspirationskälla för Wagner som sedermera blev Liszts svärson. Les préludes fick ny aktualitet i 1940-talets Tyskland när Hitler valde stycket som signaturmusik till journalfilmer från nazisternas krigståg i Europa.
