"Only once have I succeeded in fully realizing my intentions, in Boléro." Maurice Ravel composed Boléro (1928) as a bold experiment in rhythm, timbre, and endurance. Originally written as ballet music for the Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein, the work is based on an almost ascetic musical material - an unchanging rhythm of the snare drum together with two simple melodies repeated without thematic development. What changes instead is the color, density, and dynamics of the orchestra. Over a sustained ostinatory rhythm, the melody wanders through the orchestra's instruments, one by one, in a slow and relentless rise toward a monumental climax. Ravel himself emphasized the monotonous and almost mechanical character of the work, describing it as a pure study in orchestration rather than an expression of drama or narrative. It is precisely this consistent limitation that gives the music its hypnotic, almost trance-like effect. Boléro immediately attracted great attention upon its premiere in Paris, and achieved worldwide success within months. It became Ravel's most famous work, remains one of the most frequently performed classical pieces in the world, and is considered one of the most iconic and powerful orchestral experiences of the 20th century.

Mårten Larsson was born in Örebro and trained at the Royal Academy of Music under Alf Nilsson. He has been a leading oboist in Sweden for many years and is solo oboist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a member of the Stockholm Sinfonietta. Mårten Larsson teaches at the Gothenburg Academy of Music and Drama and has released albums with music by Johan Helmich Roman, JS Bach and Keith Jarrett, among others.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No. 21 Piano Concerto No. 21 is most often associated in Sweden with Bo Widerberg's international film success Elvira Madigan from 1967. The middle movement was used as a theme in the tragic love story of the line dancer Elvira Madigan and Lieutenant Sixten Sparre. Mozart knew a lot about young love being destined for ruin. This is one of Mozart's most self-indulgent slow movements. Mozart's importance for the development of the piano concerto was as great as Beethoven's for the symphony. He innovated both form and content, for example by allowing the wind instruments not only to amplify the sound but also to provide additional color. In addition, there was a free interplay between soloist and orchestra. A total of 27 piano concertos was composed by Mozart's in his short life.

Erik Risberg was employed as a pianist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra from 1995 to 2023, also performing on organ, harpsichord and other keyboard instruments. He regularly performed as a chamber musician, including in a piano duo with Bengt Forsberg. Erik Risberg has also been a valued teacher of musical performance at the Gothenburg Academy of Music and Drama for many years and also gives introductions at the Symphony Orchestra's concerts.

Early in his career, the young Lars-Erik Larsson traveled to Vienna to learn twelve-tone music. But it was as a civil servant at Radiotjänst (now Sveriges Radio) that he blossomed as a composer. He was hired in 1937 and that same year also saw the start of Dagens Dikt, a program accompanied by Larsson's music. With works such as Pastoral Suite and Förklädd gud, which were included in other radio programs, Lars-Erik Larsson became one of Sweden's greatest and most beloved composers of the 20th century. The text for the lyrical suite Förklädd gud is taken from the poems of Love in 21st Century by Hjalmar Gullberg (1933), also from Skåne and one of the radio's employees. The music, written for reciter, soprano, baritone, choir and orchestra, moves between pastoral sounds, Nordic folk tones and neoclassicism. Larsson lets the choir's soft harmonies carry Gullberg's humanistic message while the soloists give the story both intimacy and brilliance. When Förklädd gud was first performed on the radio in 1940, a world war was raging on the continent. In a time of deep unrest, the music became a quiet respite of hope. The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960) Suite from The Prodigal Son With a music that can be said to be characterized by the musical aftermath of Romanticism, the composer and conductor Hugo Alfvén left his mark on Swedish musical life during the first half of the 20th century. The ballet The Prodigal Son, or more precisely: the orchestral suite from it, would become Alfvén's last major composition. The ballet depicts the biblical story of the son who leaves his father, squanders his inheritance, but who then returns in repentance and through reconciliation is given a picture of what is genuinely human. The music can be said to reflect this inner journey – we travel from the lyrical to the dramatic. From the youthful to the thoughtful of age. In between we hear evidence of Alfvén's soft spot for folk melody and the rhythmic danceable. Several of the melodies are also found in the many songs that Alfvén had arranged and composed for choir Orphei Drängar, which he over many years turned into the notorious male choir it still is today.

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) Suite No 2 from Daphnis et Chloé It is difficult to capture this orchestral suite in a few words, which after more than 100 years strikes an audience with enormous richness of color and virtuosity. A music that is only remarkable at the time of its creation. 1913 is the year that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring is played for the first time, and Anton Webern's 6 orchestral works are performed in Vienna. Two concerts whose musical revolution was for a long time overshadowed by the scuffles that arose during the concerts. Ravel's suite was already embraced during the composer's lifetime, but its musical revolution in harmony and orchestration is no lesser. This suite, which is part of a ballet set to the Greek tale of Daphnis and Chloé, to which Diaghilev's famous dance company danced, bears all the characteristics that made Ravel's music immortal. It was written in parallel with the dramatic Fifth Symphony, and they were premiered at the same time on December 8, 1808 in Vienna. Beethoven himself named the Pastoral Symphony, which reveals a new side of him - the thoughtful, naturalistic and soulful. Together with the Fifth Symphony, it marks a new, more narrative and emotional stage in his work. With its five movements and descriptive titles such as “Awakening of Joyful Feelings on Arrival in the Countryside” and “Scene by the Stream”, it differs in character from his other symphonies. Beethoven emphasized in a famous quote that the work should not be seen as an exact nature painting, but as an expression of the feelings that nature arouses. The thunderstorm of the fourth movement with swirling strings, drums and winds is particularly famous, and illustrates the dramatic forces of nature. The last movement is the shepherd's song with happy and grateful feelings. The symphony reflects Beethoven's strong love for country life and every summer he escaped the noise of the city to seek peace in the countryside. Haydn Variations Op 56 Like Beethoven, Brahms was very interested in the variation form and stands out as one of the foremost composers in this area. The theme for the Haydn variations is a chorale called St Antoni, followed by eight variations and a grand finale. A good friend of Brahms, Karl Ferdinand Pohl, had brought some unknown music to Brahms in 1870, including some scores or divertimenti for wind orchestra. One partita contained the Antonius Chorale, which Brahms fell in love with and noted in his sketchbook. At first it was believed to have been composed by Haydn, but researchers increasingly believe that it was possibly one of Haydn's students, probably Ignatz Pleyel, who composed the partita. The theme is based on a hymn that pilgrims used to sing on St. Anthony's Day. The Brahms work is available in two versions, one for two pianos and one for orchestra. Brahms entered the orchestral version in his catalog first, but it was the piano version that first appeared in print. The duo version was first performed by Brahms himself and Clara Schumann. The orchestral version was first performed in November 1873 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Brahms.

Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra. In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region. The Gothenburg Symphony works regularly with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Joana Carneiro, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christian Zacharias and Anja Bihlmaier.
